Regular registration runs from February 16-April 15, 2019. 

Late registration runs from April 16-May 15, 2019. Since preparation time is needed for some special offerings, registration for the following activities closes on April 15:

If you go by a pen name please register (and book your hotel room) under your legal name. You can enter your pen name for display on your badge per instructions below.


  • If you're not already a member you can qualify for the member rate by joining HNS at: https://historicalnovelsociety.org/members/

  • Currently enrolled university students may register at this special rate. Students may sign up for Preconference Workshops and may attend all Friday and Saturday sessions and lunch buffets (but not the banquet).


Your registration includes opening reception, two $15 breakfast vouchers, two buffet lunches, and closing banquet with entree choice.

OPTIONAL PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

We are offering optional morning and afternoon workshops on Thursday, June 20, 9AM-4PM. Fees apply. 

Preconference Academy Workshops will be held at the nearby MGM Hotel, and shuttle service will be provided for all attendees. Attendees should plan on being ready to shuttle a half hour before each workshop.

  • Teel James Glenn will take students through basic footwork, swordplay, and parrying techniques from several periods and cultures of history.

  • Alison Stuart will walk participants through the major components of the Scrivener interface and guide them from starting a new project through to compiling a project to a manuscript format in Word.

  • Auditors may attend the session described above to learn and observe ONLY. They may NOT participate in the class by asking questions or engaging in any one-on-one individual exercises and/or demos.

  • David Ebershoff will discuss the page-to-screen journeys for two of his novels and his recent work writing for television and film as well as what makes a good book-to-screen adaptation. Regular participants should read Alice Munro’s short story “A Wilderness Station” in advance.

  • Auditors may attend the session described above to learn and observe ONLY. They may NOT participate in the class by asking questions or engaging in any one-on-one individual exercises and/or demos.

For those interested in Scrivener software: Scrivener is offering HNS members and conference attendees a 20% discount on the price of a regular desktop license for Scrivener (MacOS or Windows).   • Participants can ask author and former editor David Ebershoff anything about the editing process, what’s really going on inside a large publishing house, and what authors should know about their editors.

  • Karen Chase will offer guidance on how to define aspects of your own plan to include: a unique author brand, a network/audience, a platform tools list, and marketing outlets.

  • Join fightmaster and historical novelist Teel James Glenn on a journey through the process of creating believable and dramatic action scenes in every kind of fiction. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in interactive demos.

  • Auditors may attend the session described above to learn and observe ONLY. They may NOT participate in the class by asking questions or engaging in any one-on-one individual exercises and/or demos.


OPTIONAL HOOCH THROUGH HISTORY EVENT.  For  details about the event visit here. Learn about our hooch historian Isobel Carr here. This event has limited enrollment and is open only to regular registrants. If any openings are available after April 15, registrants will be informed they may add a guest.

  • Friday, June 21, 5-6:30PM. A tasting flight across the centuries, touching down in six countries around the globe.


OPTIONAL 10-MINUTE AGENT/EDITOR PITCH SESSIONS. Registration extended to April 30!

All pitches will take place during conference hours on Friday and Saturday. Registration packets will indicate assigned time for pitch(es).A limited number of pitch sessions may be available at the conference.

Agent/editor pitch sessions close on April 30 so appointments can be arranged.

AGENT AND EDITOR BIOS CAN BE FOUND HERE. You may sign up for one or two agents/editors. Select your first-choice agent or editor from either session block in which she is available, A or B. If you wish to pitch to a second agent/editor, select that person from the other session block.


OPTIONAL BLUE PENCIL CAFE is limited to 150 mentees so sign up early if interested.  Registration closes on April 15. For more information, visit our Blue Pencil Cafe web page.

Blue Pencil is closed as of April 15 so mentor and mentee matches and arrangements can be made.

Mentors and mentees will be contacted after April 15  about pairings and logistics.


OPTIONAL COLD READS SESSIONS

We're once again offering our popular Cold Reads Sessions, on-the-spot critiques of the first two pages of your manuscript by agents or editors. You don't need to sign up in advance, but you do need to come prepared. For details go here.

OPTIONAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES.  The HNS Conference is an all-volunteer production. You can contribute by accepting one or two 2-hour shifts. It's a great opportunity to network with other attendees, board members, presenters, and special guests. (You'll be contacted later about assignment and scheduling.)

The HNS Conference is a not-for-profit association dedicated to promoting historical fiction. Registration fees will be refunded, minus a $100 processing fee, through May 31. No registration fees will be refunded after May 31, 2019.
